Alexsandra M. Mitchell is the Manager of Education and Public Programs at the California African American Museum & Art + Practice, and Adjunct Professor of African American Literature at Los Angeles Valley College. Among her various responsibilities at CAAM, Alexsandra oversees collaborative programming efforts with institutions such as Netflix, HBO, LA Philharmonic, LA Opera, PEN America, and Amazon Studios. Prior to her work in Los Angeles, Alexsandra held positions at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, New York Public Library, New York University’s Gallatin School for Individualized Study, National Geographic Television, The Library of Congress, The West African Research Center in Dakar, Senegal, The New York Historical Society, The Weeksville Heritage Center in Brooklyn, New York, and Pratt University’s Graduate School of Information. She received her BA in African American Studies from Howard University, and a Dual Masters in Africana Studies and Library Science from New York University and Long Island University, respectively before completing her doctoral course work at Cornell University in Africana studies. Alexsandra serves on the board of directors for CAMPO, a nonprofit creative institute based in Pueblo Garzon, Uruguay, supporting artists-as-changemakers by offering transformative experiences through various programs under big Uruguayan skies, and is a volunteer screening judge for the Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival. She has appeared on the Travel Channel’s “Mysteries at the Museum”, and NPR, and her work has been featured in the LA Times, New York Times, ABC, and NBC. Alexsandra is co-author of Research Techniques and Strategies for the Study of Black Writings, Rowman & Littlefield (forthcoming) and a contributor to Pushing the Margins: Women of Color and Intersectionality in Library and Information Science.
